Edo University Iyamho has made unprecedented history by emerging the best State University in the ranking of universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the Open Educational Resources (OER). The University emerged third out of the 160 assessed universities. This feat is seen as huge, considering the fact that the barely two years old University was established to intervene in providing quality education to Edo State indigenes, fellow Nigerians and other nationals, as we believe that we can provide access to world class education in Nigeria.
Speaking on the outcome of the OER ranking, the NUC Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Ibrahim Usman Yakassai, stated that the “exercise was conducted by a 12- member National Expert Group (NEGOR) on OER ranking and a four-person team of external experts from outside Nigeria.” The Open Educational Resources, just like the name suggest, borders on the core values of the University system with emphasis on digital lecture notes, conference papers, research cum publications which could be freely accessed both in quality and quantity as obtainable in top notch universities, through which teaching and research could be enhanced.
The achievement of Edo University as regard the OER ranking could be seen as a function of the vision of the Edo State Government in providing world class education to Nigerians through access to modern educational facilities and high calibre manpower. It must be stated that the University management under the able leadership of the Acting Vice –Chancellor, Engr. Prof. E.O. Aluyor is fully committed to the vision of delivering a world class university (so properly called) to Nigerians at a minimal cost. This focus, no doubt, underscores the need for the University to be among the very best, not just in Africa, but indeed, the world.
