Background: The prevalence of HIV infection has been described in
the Delta ~tates of Nigeria in many publications and appears to be
quite varied depending on the publication.
Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara is a newly built
hospital located about 110 km from Asaba, the capital city of Delta
Objective: To determine the prevalence of HIV infection in the population
of patients attending the newly established teaching hospital,
in Oghara, Delta State.
We made an attempt to retrospectively analyze the records on the
patients attending the hospital. This study will enable us to carry out
public information awareness programme on the spreading of this
infection in this part of the State and also to make recommendation
to the State Government in other areas related to this. In addition,
this study will provide a reference for further research in this area.
Methodology: A total of 352 patients' blood samples were screened
for HIV 1&2 antibodies using four different rapid diagnostic kits, all
positive were plasma saved for further testing for confirmation.
Results: Fifty-eight (16.5%) patients tested positive in total, out of
this, male were 25 (43%) and 33 (57%). However, male have higher
prevalence of HIV infection of 22.7% of the total number of male
tested, while female was 13% of the total number of female tested.
This prevalence is very high compare to previous work done in a
major city few kilo metres away from Oghara, Delta State.
Conclusion: More males are becoming infected with HIV due to
their very high level of promiscuity and polygamy. In view of this
prevalence, urgent action needs to be put in place to stop this infection
and also those already infected to receive treatment.
