Abstract

This course examines socioeconomic and political development in Russia from the age of Tsarism to the establishment of the Soviet Union. It discusses the legacies of the various Tsars of Russia from Ivan the Terrible (1547-1584), the first Tsar to Nicholas II (1894-1917), the last Tsar. Further, it analyses the origin and implications of serfdom and its abolition, early Russian industrial processes as well as the October manifesto of 1905, the revolution of 1917 and its aftermath.
