Abstract

Abstract
Background: Churg Strauss syndrome is a medical
COIId-tionof unknoVin aetiology characterized by as/hma,
eosinophilia and finally vasculitis involving small vessels
in thelimbs and nasal sinuses aoo the lungs. The purpose
of this Tevie is to highlight the natural history of this
condifon, the pathogenesis, clinical features and
lteatmenl modalities available and the prognosis.
Methods: Literature on the subJect Vias reviewed using
manuallibrary search. articles injoumals, internet search
andconference abstracts. .
Result Churg Strauss syndrome has been reported to
be predominantly common in mjddle es}edindiv;duals in
their m,:ddle age of life with a history of new onset or
'liorsened asthma. The condition has ,'a male
predisposition. Prior to the advent of steroid therapy this
condjtion invariably leads to death. but since the
introduction of prednisolone therapy and other
immunosuppres . e therapy, the outlook has improved
forsufferers and long term survival has been seen.
Conclusion: Suspicion of this condition should be based
en a good history, physicaJ examination and laboratory
'nvesligalions and diagnosis based on the criteria that
has been drawn by the American College of
Rheumatology.
