Abstract

 

This paper presents the design and construction of a split, direct current (D.C) power supply unit for a 1000W audio power amplifier. Open circuit test of the transformer was conducted and the power factor was determined to be 0.795, while the efficiency was found to be 92% at short circuit test. The percentage voltage regulation was 93.41%. The transformer was operated at 90% of its maximum load rating. This split D.C power supply unit was regulated at ±65V. When loaded with a 4? 1500W choke resistor, the test result gave an average ammeter current reading of 15.27A. The percentage regulation of these outputs was 99.75%. The choice of materials, devices used for the design of the step down transformer and circuitry was informed on its easy availability in our local markets. The design of this power supply unit cost about #12,372.00 as compared to #27,000.00 for the imported power supply unit of similar capacity
