Abstract

Leakage of current to earth due to insulation breakdown between the live conductor and earth could have disastrous consequences on the sqfety of operating personnel of high­ voltage and heavy - duty electrical machines. In addition, the output power of the given equipment drastically reduces, leading to unsatisfactory performance. It is absolutely necessary therefore, to interrupt and isolate such faults quickly, with minimum delay. A high sensitivity, fast response, voltage-operated earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) with in-built discrimination is presented. The trip current and voltage are respectively 0.06A and 0.16V. with a limiting power capacity of 20KVA. The design features, which include a robust contact with high breaking capacity, coil test button, a switch mechanism, and a plastic casing, were fabricated from materials available in the Nigerian market. When subjected to tests, the breaker interrupted and isolated the supply within 3 seconds.
